The CEGIS organised a webinar in collaboration with Chennai Centre for China Studies (C3S) on "Confrontation or Containment: Trump 2.0 and China in Latin America." This discussion comes at a crucial time, as the geopolitical landscape is witnessing significant shifts with the return of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency and China’s deepening economic and strategic engagement in Latin America. The return of Donald Trump to the White House in 2025 signals a potential shift in the US foreign policy, particularly in regions where strategic competition with China is intensifying. Nowhere is this contest more evident than in Latin America, a region long considered Washington’s backyard but increasingly intertwined with Beijing’s economic, political, and military interests. With Trump 2.0, the key question is whether the US will confront China head on in Latin America or adopt a containment strategy through economic and security initiatives. This webinar seeks to explore the evolving dynamics of US-China competition in Latin America under Trump’s second presidency, assessing implications for regional economies, security frameworks, governance, and geopolitical alignments and also touches upon immigration and drug trade.
